Which FSSAI license does your business need?

Basic Registration

For large-scale food businesses, importers, exporters, and any business operating across multiple states. Mandatory regardless of turnover for certain business types.

Transport & Wholesale exception: For transportation and wholesale businesses, the State License threshold is ₹30 crore (not ₹20 crore), and the Central License threshold is above ₹30 crore.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Operating without FSSAI — the real cost

The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 prescribes strict penalties for operating without a valid FSSAI license — and food safety officers conduct surprise inspections.

Operating Without License

Up to ₹5 Lakh

Fine up to ₹5 lakh for operating a food business without a valid FSSAI registration or license. Plus, the business can be forcibly shut down by the food safety officer.

Unsafe / Substandard Food

₹1L – ₹10L

Selling food that is unsafe, adulterated, or substandard attracts fines up to ₹10 lakh — and criminal prosecution for serious cases involving injury or death.

Late Renewal Penalty

₹100 / day

Every day your FSSAI license is expired without renewal attracts a penalty of ₹100 per day. Taxocount sends renewal reminders 60 days before expiry for all clients.

Misleading Advertisement

Up to ₹10 Lakh
